As an educator, this quote above is very inspirational to me and I feel that it can inspire others as well. A few years ago, I ran across this quote when I was struggling with the notion of whether the field of education, let alone early childhood, was really what I wanted to do. Each morning after I pray, I recite this quote. "Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere." And I find this to be extremely true because no matter where a person goes, the things they have learned will never leave them. Though the children I work with are only 3 years of age, I tell them everyday that you never forget what you have learned and you take it with you so that you can learn more.
The above image I have posted throughout my classroom for everyone to see. Though I am still a young educator, the first thing I learned was that all children do not learn at the same pace nor do they learn the same way. Sometimes the typical way of teaching things doesn't click to the learning ability of the child. Sometimes you have to let children explore and see the various ways in which they learn and acquire information, in which one of the main ones is through play. Often times in my classroom I will disregard the lesson plan and just let my children play freely throughout the day and observe them. Play brings out a lot of things in children when you just sit and watch.
Now on to the blog.....what a powerful statement you make when you say that students should not learn the way we teach but that we should teach the way they learn! That is so true! I have found that there are so many teachers that are set in the way they teach that they do not try to teach students in the way they are able to learn. Instead they drill it in to them until they memorize things and not necessarily learn and retain information. Great blog!

Shauna,
DeleteThanks for your comment! In my short tenure as an educator I have learned that not all children learn in the same manner or at the same pace. As educators, that is what we have to realize and see the potential in each child as an individual. Sometimes we have to let them teach us so that we will know how to teach them!

ReplyDeleteWhat a great quote. We really do take what we learn with us. That's why early childhood education, the first learning experience, is so important. Additionally, I agree with the quote that says teachers need to teach the way students learn. We honestly don't do that enough. For example, research suggest that children learn best through hands on learning experiences, but we place them in front of textbooks. Additionally, we know that boys learn best through movement, yet we sit them in desk for hours. It just doesn't make sense.
I enjoyed reading both of your quotes. So many times we do have to rethink our teaching method to help children learn who are struggling to grasp the concepts the first time it is taught.

Ke'Andrea you stated that your vision is for children to learn and thrive and I see your image and quote ties in with what your vision is. I find it great joy that the Learn image picture is a picture I used several times during my Master program.
ReplyDeleteThat quote kind of coincides with my quote "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I may remember. Involve me and I will learn." -Benjamin Franklin
Learning will definitely follow its owner, but we first must involve them and it will become their treasure.
Thanks and I love your blog!!!
